How often should interior walls be painted?

Generally, interior walls are painted at a frequency of 3-6 years. It largely depends on the type of Interior emulsion applied. Washable and stain resistant interior emulsions tend to look fresh for longer and can be cleaned and maintained for longer periods. You can choose from the wide range of interior wall paints offered by Indigo Paints to achieve the perfect look for your walls.

How do you prepare exterior walls for painting?

The steps recommended below must be followed for the best performance of any exterior emulsion.

  1. The surface to be painted must be cleaned thoroughly using a wire brush and clean water. All traces of loose paint, algae, dust, grime must be removed. Areas where there is a high potential for algae growth must be cleaned using a bio-wash solution before painting.
  2. Cracks, if any, on the surface to be painted must be closed.
  3. Areas with constant dampness must be identified and corrected prior to painting. The source of the leak must be fixed permanently.
  4. If the substrate shows signs of chalkiness, a primer with anti-efflorescence properties like Indigo WT Sealer Primer must be used.
What kind of paint do you use for the exterior?

Identify the reason for getting your wall painted. For medium term protection and shaded exteriors, you can choose our Exterior Emulsion Gold Series.

For long-term, we have Premium XT Exterior emulsion with a rich matt finish and for walls that need that extra shine and that extra protection from moisture and algae we have Acrylic Laminate.

Another unique product for the exteriors that combine protection from dirt and water is the Indigo Dirtproof and Waterproof exterior laminate and it’s the perfect choice for worry- free walls.

Is it better to spray or brush exterior paint?

Spray application is convenient if large areas have to be painted and there are not too many colour variants. Spray application gets the job done faster but requires a skilled applicator and there will be 35-45% wastage of material as spray mist. Care must be taken to mask existing furniture and nearby items when using spray application, especially during re-painting of interiors and this can be a tedious process.

Brush / Roller application takes more time but wastage of paint is much less compared to spray application. This method of application is generally preferred over spray for repainting interiors or when the number of shades involved are high.

What is enamel paint best used for?

Enamel paints can be used on a wide range of surfaces including metal, wood, and at times even walls. Due to its glossy nature PU Super Gloss enamel is widely used on wooden doors & windows, metal gates, grills, garden furniture etc and also on substrates like MDF & plywood.

Can we use enamel paint on walls?

Enamel paint for walls might sound like an odd combination, but on the contrary to what you might think, enamel paints can be a good option for not just wood or metal surfaces but also walls. Since enamel paints are resistant to excessive moisture, it also works well if you use it on surfaces that need to be cleaned multiple times.

However, one must note that enamels are non-breathable systems and hence any leak within the wall will easily lead to paint failure.

Can you prime and paint on the same day?

Always refer to the instructions on the paint can and also refer the technical datasheet of the product for recoating intervals. It can vary from product to product.

What is a primer surfacer?

A Primer surfacer or Primer Sealer is a primer with high binder content, this aids to seal the pores of the substrate effectively thereby enhancing adhesion and giving a uniform finish & gloss of the topcoat.

How do you apply wall paint?

Normally three methods are used to apply paint on walls – by brush, roller and spray gun. The paint needs to be diluted to the right consistency while choosing any of the above methods. Application by roller is the most common method used while applying wall paint.

Do you have to wash walls before painting?

Usually, exterior walls exposed to sunlight, rain and dust will need washing before painting. You can use a scrapper / abrasive paper to remove the loose paint. Use a pressure wash and scrub with a wire brush to remove accumulated dirt, grease, algae, fungus, and moss growth. For Interior surfaces with oil, grease, or wax stains you can wash it away with a mild soap solution and a soft sponge. Please make sure that the walls are dry completely before starting the painting work.

Which type of paint is best for interior walls?

Identify the reason for getting your wall painted. For short term protection or a maintenance coat, you can choose from our Bronze and Silver series emulsions. These serve the purpose and are easy on the pocket.
If Stain resistance and easy-to-clean properties are your concern then our Premium Interior Gold Series, available in matt & sheen, will do the job.

What is the difference between distemper and emulsion paint?

Emulsion Paints are water based paints which are more long-lasting when compared to distemper paint. Distempers are more conservative form of paint and has lesser durability than emulsions. Emulsions boasts of smoother finish as compared to distempers.

What is Indigo Floor Paint?

Indigo floor paint is a tough emulsion that is designed specially to protect and beautify cemented floors, interlock tiles, cement blocks etc. that are used on driveways & walkways. This paint is washable, and resistant to fungus and algae with good abrasion resistance to handle low to medium traffic. Indigo floor coat emulsion is available in a wide variety of non- fading shades to suit your needs.

How Frequently Should I Paint My Home?

Generally, the wear and tear to the existing coating or a special occasion or festival is what influences the frequency of painting. It can range from 3 – 8 years.

In case of interiors, the walls of the kitchen, kids’ rooms, and bathrooms tend to get dirty faster. The paint on the walls of bedrooms and living areas suffer less wear and tear.

In case of exteriors the level of exposure to the elements determines the life of the coating. Higher the exposure, greater will be the impact on the life of paint film.

What Are Primers and Putty?

Putties and primes are the foundation to any topcoat.

Indigo Putties are generally paste like in consistency and designed to level out the undulations on the wall and create a smooth even surface.

Indigo primers are formulated mainly to improve the adhesion between the emulsion topcoat and the wall. However, there are specialized primers also in our range that are designed to address specific problems like the stain block primer that helps hide tough stains. Do you have to wash walls before painting?

Can I just paint over old paint?

Yes, but depending on the condition of the previous coating the surface will need to be prepared before applying the final paint. If the previous coating is in good condition, clean the surface to removes dust, and grease. In case the previous coating is glossy, sand using abrasive paper till the surface is dull and clean the surface. If the previous coating is in bad condition, remove the loose / flaky paint using an abrasive paper, use pressure wash and scrub with a wire brush to remove algae, fungus, and moss growth. Fill the cracks / dents, if required, with Indigo Acrylic Wall Putty. Apply one coat of Indigo Wall Primer, followed by 2 coats of Indigo Wall Paint keeping 4-6 hours interval between coats.

What are the different types of wall paint?

How do I choose a wall paint?

Primarily, it depends upon the wall surface to be painted i.e. Interior or Exterior. Depending upon the surface you can opt for various categories of wall paints like Cement paint, Distempers, Enamels or Emulsions. Wall paints can be selected based on your requirement of finish, features, and budget.

Is wall paint washable?

Wall Paints that have high emulsion content, a component that gives the paint higher wet scrub resistance, will have a better washability. For eg. Indigo Interior Emulsion Silver Series (Economy Range) will have moderate washability, while Indigo Luxury Interior Emulsion Platinum Series (Luxury Range) will have best in class washability.

Which paint is good for internal walls?

There are mainly 2 types of interior wall paints namely Distempers and Emulsions. Emulsions offer a better finish and longevity as compared to distempers. Emulsions generally offer features like smooth/matt/sheen finish, stain resistance, high opacity, coverage, durability, and are very easy to clean. What is the procedure for painting a wall?

Before applying the Wall Paint, clean the surface of loose paint, dust, and grease. Use a pressure wash & scrub with a wire brush to remove algae, fungus, and moss growth. Apply 2 coats of Indigo Polymer Putty and one coat of Indigo Wall Primer, followed by 2 coats of Indigo Wall Paint keeping 4-6 hours of interval between coats

What is used to fill large gaps in wood?

It is recommended to fill very large gaps using smaller pieces of the wood itself with the help of a carpenter. Small cracks / holes can be filled by using polyester putty or multipurpose sealants.

What is a primer surfacer?

What is the use of red oxide primer?

Red oxide primer is a protective coating applied on ferrous metal surfaces to prevent them from rusting and corroding due to exposure to the elements. It helps increase the life of the metal and the durability of the final topcoat.

Can I put water-based paint over oil-based primer?

Yes, you can use water-based topcoat or emulsion Paint over oil-based Primer or Solvent-thinnable Cement primer.

Topcoat coating interval between Oil based Primer and Emulsion Paint should be after overnight drying ie; 12 hrs, and should not be more than 48 hrs.

Oil base Primer if allowed to dry for more than 48 hours, will lead to inferior adhesion of the Topcoat.

What is the purpose of wood primer?

Wood primer is the undercoat applied on wood surfaces before it is painted. The purpose is to achieve superior adhesion of the final topcoat to the wood surface. It also offers short term protection for the wood from moisture up until

the topcoat is applied. Indigo wood primer has excellent coverage, is easy to use, and dries quickly.

How to use wall putty?

Wall putty helps provide a smooth and even look to the wall and is a recommended step in the painting system. Wall putty is generally applied using a putty blade and involves applying multiple coats in thin fine layers to remove any undulations and holes on the surface.

Apply two to three coats to achieve best results. Make sure the first coat is completely dry before you apply the second coat. A coat of primer must be applied to the bare wall before you apply acrylic wall putty.

What is acrylic putty?

Acrylic putty is a water-based composition with a smooth consistency used as an undercoat on walls to level out undulations, small holes / cracks and prepare the wall for receiving paint. Acrylic wall putty from Indigo Paints is a water-based finishing putty for interiors. It stands apart because of its superior quality, fast-drying property and ability to provide an excellent bonding between the wall surface and the paint.

What is the difference between white cement and putty?

Wall Putty is a well-designed mix of white cement with fine fillers and polymer, which can be easily applied on masonry walls to fill all unevenness and undulations on the wall to give a smooth crack free surface, ready for applying Paint.

Application of only white cement will form a very thin layer and not give filling on walls. It can at times lead to cracks also.

What is the difference between primer and putty?

The basic difference is that primer is a liquid product used to improve adhesion between the substrate and the topcoat or primers are used to address specific issue like chalking, alkalinity etc.

Putty is a paste or powder like product designed to level out the undulations in the wall and leave a smooth and even finish. Putty must always be overcoated with an appropriate primer before applying the topcoat.

What paint do you use on putty?

Generally, all types of paints like emulsions, distempers can be used over putty as long as the appropriate primer coat has been applied.

Is putty required for exterior walls?

Application of putty on exterior walls is not necessary. However, if one desires a smooth even finish on exterior walls, two coats of Indigo Polymer putty can be used followed by Exterior wall primer & a topcoat of your choice.

How many types of wall putty are there?

In simple terms there are two types of putty. Acrylic putty and powder-based putty. Powder-based wall putty consists of white cement mixed with polymers and minerals. As it is white cement-based, it can be used on interior and exterior walls for its powerful binding capabilities.

Acrylic wall putty is a putty with smooth paste-like consistency and based on acrylics. It is generally recommended for interiors.

Is putty required for repainting?

If the previous coating is in good condition and requires no levelling, then putty is not required for repainting.

However, in cases where the previous coating has deteriorated leaving behind uneven surface, or in order to fill nail holes and small cracks, putty will be required.

What happens if you don’t paint over primer?

Primers are designed to improve adhesion and bind the surface. It cannot withstand the attack of harsh elements. If you don’t apply a coat of paint over the wall primer, it will most likely deteriorate and turn into a chalk-like powder.

Can you leave putty unpainted?

The role of the putty is to smoothen / level; the surface and it is essentially an undercoat. It should under all circumstances be over coated using a primer, followed by two-three coats of emulsion.

Ideally puttied surfaces must be overcoated within 5-7 days and not left exposed.

Can we add colour in wall putty?

It is not recommended to add colour to putty.

Is Primer necessary before Wall Putty?

Yes. If acrylic wall putty is being used then a primer coat is recommended before and after application of the putty. In case of cement-based putties or Polymer putty a coat of primer is recommended after application of the putty. The coat of primer helps in binding the putty to the wall.

Is Wall Putty waterproof?

Not all types of wall putty are waterproof. If you are looking for waterproof wall putty, Indigo waterproof wall putty is highly recommended. It has a special silicon additive that works as a water repellent and is designed to work on interior and exterior surfaces.

Does enamel paint work on plastic?

It is not recommended to apply enamel on plastic, unless the surface has been prepared using an appropriate primer that promotes adhesion to plastic.

Should I use a brush or roller to paint a door?

In case the door is being painted using a clear lacquer, like PU or Melamine, we would recommend use of a brush for the application.

In case the substrate is being painted using a PU Super Gloss enamel, a foam roller or a brush can be used.

What is PU enamel paint?

PU stands for Polyurethane. Indigo PU Super gloss enamel is a rich gloss polyurethane-based enamel with a quick drying & non-yellowing resin system. It is designed for use over wood and metal.

What are the advantages of PU enamel paint?

A unique advantage of PU super gloss enamel paint is that it can dry quickly when exposed to air, as opposed to alkyd-based enamels that are commonly found in the market. Also, PU enamels have better non-yellowing properties when compared to ordinary enamels.

Can you use water-based paint over enamel paint?

Yes, you can technically use water-based paints over enamels. The surface will however need to be prepared by cleaning and sanding and a solvent based primer, like Indigo Universal Primer must be applied to promote adhesion. Then the surface is ready to take on the water-based paint.

What is the difference between enamel and epoxy paint?

Epoxy paint is more heavy duty compared to Alkyd based Enamel. Epoxy based coatings will give hard & abrasion resistant film with higher chemical resistance. Epoxy Paint is suited for application where higher corrosion resistance, wear & tear resistance is desired. Enamels are for general purpose application in less demanding environment.

Single pack epoxies however will need to be overcoated using an appropriate topcoat when exposed to extreme outdoor conditions.

Is enamel paint washable?

Does enamel paint need primer on metal?

Yes, enamel paint needs a primer when used on metal or wooden surfaces to ensure proper adhesion with the substrate.

What time of year is best to paint the exterior of the house?

In general terms any season other than rainy season should suit exterior painting. However, painting is not recommended when ambient temperatures are above 35⁰C and below 10⁰C. It is also equally important that the substrate ie; the wall, is not too hot or too cold or wet. Relative Humidity should be between 40% – 60% for best results and avoid painting when relative humidity is greater than 85% and also when humidity is very low.

Painting should be done when one starts to notice deterioration in the existing paint film, loss of paint film integrity and algae / fungal growth.

Repainting frequency generally depends on the type of paint used previously and also the conditions the wall has been exposed to. Generally exterior emulsions can last from 3 years to 7 years depending on the product used and the system of application, for eg: a product like Dirtproof and waterproof exterior laminate offers long term protection of 5-7 years.

What is exterior paint used for?

Can I paint over exterior paint with interior paint?

Technically there is nothing wrong with painting an interior emulsion over an exterior emulsion, however it is not practical and usually not recommended. All exterior coatings come designed with features that help outlast the effects of sunlight & rainfall and offers all the decorative features that the exterior of

a house needs. This cannot be substituted by interior emulsions as these are formulated for a different purpose.

Does exterior paint need primer?

Yes. The main role of an exterior primer is to improve the adhesion between the substrate and the topcoat. It also improves the coverage of the topcoat. An exterior primer also plays an important role by improving the hiding especially when changing the colour of the exterior of your house completely during repainting and makes the process of colour transition a lot smoother and easier.

These include the quality of interior paint used, the system of application followed, the level of abuse it has been exposed to and also the general upkeep and maintenance of the wall. A good quality emulsion, applied following the correct system should last between five to seven years. Should the ceiling be painted the same colour as the walls?

It is common to paint the ceiling in pure, brilliant white to create a feeling of generous space. However, contemporary designs do not conform to this thought and use the same shade for walls and ceilings to create a uniform look for the room.

What sheen is best for walls?

General sheen levels offered include Matt, soft sheen, rich sheen, glossy. It is up to each customer and their taste to select the level of sheen.

A few points to note however will be, if the surface has not been levelled properly, then higher the gloss greater the chances of surface undulations being visible when light falls on the surface.

Generally, with higher sheen levels the hiding property of paints tends to be inferior, especially for darker colours.

What is the difference between different series of products of Indigo Paints?

What is the difference between emulsion and enamel?

Emulsion is water-based paint generally used for painting masonry surfaces like walls and available in different finishes such as matt, sheen etc. Clean water is the medium used to dilute emulsions.

Enamels are solvent-based paints generally used for painting metal and wooden surfaces. Enamels are mostly available in gloss & satin finishes. Solvent based thinners like turpentine are used to dilute enamels.

What is Indigo PU Enamel?
