How long does it take to paint a house?

Thinking of painting your house but unsure of how long it can take? This one-stop guide will help you understand how much time it will take to paint your house.

Painting your own house can seem like a fun adventure but can turn out to be quite difficult and time-consuming. Even if you’re looking to get your house painted professionally, knowing how much time it will take can greatly help in cutting costs. Let’s learn more about house painting colours in this article. This article estimates the time required for each room. To calculate the time for an entire home, just multiply it by the number of rooms in your house.

Step 1: Planning ( 3-4 hrs)

Planning is vital to the house painting process. Hence, you must decide carefully what colour scheme you want in each room of your house. We understand that visualising colours on the walls can get difficult, which is why we’ve built the “Readymade colour combination” tool on Indigo paints, where you can choose any paint colour and see how it will look on the walls of each room.

If you’re short on time, you can also refer to the ready-made colour combinations on the Indigo Paint’s website for wall paint colour ideas.

These steps will significantly cut down on your planning time. It won’t take more than 3-4 hours for you to plan the paint colours for the house.

Step 2: Preparation (2-3 hours)

This is one of the most ignored steps but is vital to preserving all the furniture in your house. Take out all the furniture in your house before you begin to paint because paint might stain your furniture even if you are careful and these stains are difficult to get rid of. Emptying the entire house can seem like a daunting task but it is surely worth the effort.

Cover the furniture you cannot take out with plastic and newspaper. Additionally, cover the floor with newspaper and/or plastic to avoid staining it. Plastic will be a better option since paint can leak through newspapers. If you’re unable to find enough plastic, newspapers can be used for the same.

Step 3: Primer (2-3 hrs for priming and 3-4 hours for drying)

Wall texture is vital to making your paint come alive. Wall texture can make or break the look of your paint. Moreover, if you want to hide some imperfections on the walls, a primer can be a great way to cover them up and give your walls an even texture. So don’t skip on priming your walls.

The process of priming can take around 2-3 hours depending on the size of your room but you will have to give it some time to dry completely before you start painting. Around 3-4 hours should be sufficient to dry the primer, but it can be different based on the humidity and climate in your area.

Step 4: Painting (3-4 hours for each coat, variable time for drying)

The most exciting part of the process is here. The actual painting of the house can take you around 3-4 hours for each room. If you’re trying to paint different colours with different designs, it may take some extra time. Opt for a wider roller if you’re painting a uniform colour as it will help you save time.

More often than not you will have to apply a second coat of the paint to give it a vibrant finish. But for that, the first coat needs to dry completely. The drying time depends on the kind of paint you’re using. If you’re using an oil paint, then, the time to dry can be anywhere between 6-8 hours. Other kinds of paint can dry faster, taking around 2-3 hours. Ensure that the paint has completely dried before you apply the second coat.

Step 5: Cleaning (2 hours)

Once you have finished the process of house painting and the house paint has dried, you can start bringing all your furniture in and cleaning the room. Take off all the plastic from the floor and the fixed furniture and then you can bring in all the furniture that you had removed. This process should not take you more than 2 hours.

Overall, if you’re short on time you can paint a house in a day but it might get hectic if you’re doing it for the first time. So it’s wiser to allocate two or more days for the painting.
